My darling Mother, Father + Sis

              No doubt you will be surprised to see my change of address, but it will not be any more of a surprise to you than it was to me. But we must remember there is a war on. We are the first batch of Canadians for over two years who have been sent to a V.A.D. Hospital. V.A.D.s are supposed to be much better than the others but everyone was so good to me at the other place that I was very sorry to leave.

              We are only about 10 minutes walk from Birmingham and our quarters are in one of the Chamberlain Estates. It is very beautiful around here and the food is good so we are quite well off.

              Just before I left the other hospital I received a bunch of mail addressed to there and was sorry to see that you had been worrying. Of course these cables are rather indefinite but I was surely lucky “at first I thought I would make Canada on it as the muscle was partly shot away but now I am positive that I shall not as it is nearly healed up and I can use my arm as good as ever.

              I was certainly lucky to get out as I did and I certainly have missed some nasty scraps since then as I see by the papers that the Canadians are in it again.

              I was awfully sorry to have to cable for money when I know that every sent amounts as much. But there are some things I have to get and that was the only way I could see out of it. The cable is here and all I have to do is go out to Rubery to collect it and as that is only about 2 hrs bus ride from here I will not have any difficulty.

              I was glad to notice the note from dad in one of your letters and I am afraid that I more than evened the score with Fritz before I got mine. But some day I hope to be able to tell you all about it. Have not heard from Murray lately.
