1916: From Camp Borden to England

The Leach-Sangster Letters

The letters of 1916 offer a unique perspective on the experiences of soldiers who enlisted midway through the First World War, driven by a sense of duty to bring the conflict to an end. Written between August and December, these letters document Bob Leach and Murray Sangster’s journey from Camp Borden, Ontario, to England, where they would remain for over a year before being deployed to France.

Bob’s optimistic outlook is evident in his detailed accounts, fueled by the intention to write a memoir upon his return home. This optimism persists until they realize they won’t be home for Christmas as expected, a stark reminder of the war’s prolonged nature.

In Europe, the Battle of the Somme raged on, resulting in over one million casualties and casting a long shadow over the year. Many men who had trained alongside Bob and Murray were deployed as reinforcements and did not return.

In Canada, the issue of conscription became a focal point of political debate, reflecting the nation’s evolving role in the war.

Despite these hardships, the letters also reveal moments of camaraderie, humor, and resilience, offering a compelling glimpse into a year that would shape the course of history.
